This New Immunotherapy Could Lower the Risk of Aggressive Skin Cancer Returning After Surgery

Surgery is usually the first move against cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), the second most common skin cancer. But when a tumor comes with more aggressive features, cutting it out doesn’t always guarantee it stays gone, and until now, doctors have had few tools to lower that risk afterward.

That may be starting to change. As reported by Dermatology Times, a large clinical trial found that giving the immunotherapy drug cemiplimab (Libtayo) for a year after surgery significantly lowered the odds of high-risk SCC returning, compared with a placebo.

What the Trial Found

The trial, known as C-POST, gave 415 patients with high-risk cutaneous SCC either cemiplimab or a placebo for a year after their surgery and radiation therapy. Patients on cemiplimab were roughly 70 percent less likely to see their cancer return during the study, a notably strong result for a group already considered high risk for recurrence.

Who This Trial Applies To

C-POST specifically enrolled patients whose tumors had features linked to a higher chance of coming back or spreading. Dermatologists reviewing the results caution against assuming every SCC patient would see the same benefit. A separate trial testing a different immunotherapy drug in a broader patient group didn’t show the same results, which is a reminder that not every case qualifies.
