This ’70s Nail Shape Is Making a Major Comeback

Almond and square nails too basic for you? Bell-bottom nails might be just the thing. This trending shape, which last had its heyday during the Y2K era, goes by many names. Bell-bottom, or flared nails, are inspired by the iconic flared silhouette of the ’70s. This style also goes by duck nails, named for the animal’s flared feet.

According to Fresha, Google searches for “flared nails” have increased by 706 percent in the last year, suggesting that this nostalgic nail shape is on the cusp of having a comeback. Annabelle Taurua, beauty expert at Fresha, says the trend is so popular because it taps into the desire to bring back nostalgic beauty trends.

“Bell-bottom nails are a fun way to bring nostalgia into your manicure,” says Taurua. “The distinctive flared shape instantly gives the nails a retro feel, while still leaving plenty of room to experiment with color, finishes and nail art.”

“What makes this trend particularly interesting is the fact that it’s so different from the more streamlined nail shapes we’ve become accustomed to,” Taurua adds. “After years of almond, oval and square nails dominating, people are increasingly looking for shapes that feel more playful and expressive, and bell-bottom nails definitely deliver that.”

How to Wear Flared Nails Subtly

Don’t think you’re ready to pull off full flare nails? Taurua recommends asking your nail artist for a more subtle flare, keeping the sides only slightly wider towards the tip. “This gives you the distinctive bell-bottom silhouette without the extreme width, making it much easier to wear day-to-day.”

Many people who try this trend lean into nostalgia with bold colors and statement-making nail art, but if you’re looking to make the manicure feel more wearable, Taurua recommends keeping the length shorter and opting for a softer color. “A neutral, milky or sheer shade will make the unusual shape feel much more understated.”

How to Get the Faux Flare Look

To try the trend without full commitment, Taurua suggests trying a faux flare. “You can ask your nail tech to create the illusion of a flare through nail art, rather than actually changing the shape of the nail,” she explains. “Using a ‘faux flare’ painting technique, the design gradually widens towards the tip of the nail, mimicking the silhouette of a flared nail. Think of a curved French tip or color block that starts narrower at the base and fans out towards the free edge. The result gives you that distinctive bell-bottom effect, without the extra width that can make a heavily flared nail less practical.”
