How Long Do Hives Last? When to Actually Worry

Hives show up fast and often without warning: raised, itchy bumps or patches that can appear anywhere on the body within minutes. Most cases are harmless and clear up on their own, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), but knowing what’s normal—and what isn’t—makes the difference between waiting it out and getting to a doctor.

The medical term for hives is urticaria, and it refers to the itchy bumps and patches that suddenly appear on the skin. Some people also develop deeper swelling along with the rash, called angioedema. On lighter skin, hives typically show up pink or red; on darker skin tones, they often blend closer to the natural skin color, which can make them harder to spot, per the AAD.

An individual hive usually fades within 24 hours, though new ones can keep appearing in its place. For most people, a full episode runs anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. If hives keep coming back for six weeks or longer, that’s classified as chronic hives—and it’s the point at which the AAD recommends seeing a board-certified dermatologist, who can build a treatment plan even when hives can’t be permanently cured.

For beauty-related breakouts specifically, the trigger is often sitting in your medicine cabinet. “A sudden breakout of hives can often be a reaction to a new cosmetic product or ingredients, like fragrance, an active skin-care ingredient or a strong hair dye,” explains Dallas dermatologist Elizabeth Houshmand, MD. Her guidance: Mild cases usually respond to an over-the-counter antihistamine, but non-emergency hives are worth a dermatologist visit if they linger or become disruptive—Dr. Houshmand’s cutoffs match the AAD’s: past six weeks, or so intensely itchy that they interfere with daily life and sleep.

But cosmetic ingredients are just one possible cause. The AAD lists three broad categories: allergic reactions (to food, insect bites or medication), infections (like a cold, strep throat or a UTI) and physical triggers—pressure, cold or sunlight against the skin. That last category is known as inducible hives. The most common form, dermatographism, causes hives wherever skin is scratched, rubbed or stroked, usually fading within minutes once the pressure stops. And, in a lot of cases, no cause is ever identified at all—that’s called spontaneous hives, and it doesn’t make the condition any less treatable.

One clarification worth making: Hives themselves aren’t contagious. You can’t catch them from someone else. The confusion comes from the fact that hives can appear as a side effect of a contagious illness—the body catches the infection first, then the immune system releases histamine in response, and that histamine is what triggers the rash. Hives can spread across your own body as a reaction progresses, joining together or covering larger areas, but they never pass between people, the AAD confirms.

Most hives don’t require urgent care, but a few symptoms do. Both the AAD and Dr. Houshmand point to the same red flags: swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, a light-headed or faint feeling, or a racing heart. Any of those warrant an urgent care visit or ER trip immediately. Swelling elsewhere on the body (away from the face and airway) is usually harmless on its own, though it can recur in different spots, and the AAD notes that ongoing treatment can help prevent it from coming back.

The bottom line: An occasional, short-lived breakout is common and rarely a reason for alarm. But hives that cross the six-week mark, or that start disrupting sleep and daily life, are worth a dermatologist’s attention.
