Scarlett Johansson’s Skin-Care Brand The Outset Is Closing

Sad news for skin-care fans: The Outset, the line Scarlett Johansson co-founded with Kate Foster Lengyel in 2022, is closing.

The brand posted a short farewell on its website this week: “After an incredible journey, The Outset has made the decision to wind down operations.” Orders already placed will still ship, but shopping on the site has officially wrapped.

Fans watching closely may have seen it coming. In the weeks before the announcement, The Outset ran an end-of-summer sale with markdowns reaching 50 percent. The news still stings, especially since Johansson was so personally invested. She told NewBeauty the line grew out of her own needs after years of adult acne, and she had her sights set on QVC from the start, where it made its TV debut in 2024. As recently as this past January, the brand was still adding to its lineup with the Total Clarity Dark Spot Serum.

The Outset was built around Johansson’s sensitive skin and a pared-back philosophy (the actress liked to call it the white tee of skin care). It debuted with five products priced between $32 and $54 and eventually grew to roughly 14, with the Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum holding on to its number-one bestseller status right up to the end. Paired with the Gentle Micellar Antioxidant Cleanser and Nourishing Squalane Daily Moisturizer, it made up the simple three-step routine Johansson herself relied on.

The closure adds The Outset to a growing list of star-backed beauty lines that have bowed out recently. Gwen Stefani’s GXVE Beauty shut down earlier this year, and Drew Barrymore’s Flower Beauty closed last fall after a 13-year run.
