New Study Shows This Hair Routine Boosted Regrowth in 90 Percent of Women

Female pattern hair loss can be especially frustrating to treat, since many women don’t respond fully to minoxidil alone. A new study suggests pairing it with something already familiar to a lot of skin-care routines—microneedling—may meaningfully boost results.

As reported by Dermatology Times, researchers found that combining weekly microneedling sessions with daily topical minoxidil led to noticeable hair regrowth in 90 percent of women with female pattern hair loss over 12 weeks, with no cases of hair loss getting worse.

Women who started with more severe hair loss saw the biggest gains in hair density, suggesting the combination could be especially useful for those who’ve felt like they’ve run out of options. Microneedling is thought to work by creating tiny channels that help minoxidil absorb better into the scalp, while also stimulating the hair follicles’ own growth signals.

The treatment was generally well tolerated. Some women noticed extra hair growth on the face or arms—a known side effect of minoxidil—and a few experienced scalp itchiness that was easily managed. No serious side effects were reported.

This was a smaller, single-group study without a comparison group using minoxidil alone, so it’s not yet proof that microneedling is what made the difference. Larger, longer studies are still needed. But for women managing female pattern hair loss, especially more stubborn cases, this combination approach is an encouraging, low-risk option worth discussing with a dermatologist.
