New Study Shows This Vitiligo Cream Working in Just 3 Months

For people living with vitiligo, one of the hardest parts is not knowing whether a treatment is actually working, especially early on, when the changes can be subtle. A new real-world study, as reported by Dermatology Times, offers some reassurance. Using advanced imaging, researchers were able to visibly track skin repigmentation in patients using a topical treatment in as little as three months.

What the Research Showed

The study followed 70 patients with nonsegmental vitiligo on the face and body who applied ruxolitinib cream, sold as Opzelura, twice a day for 90 days. Researchers tracked new pigment-producing cells returning to the skin using specialized imaging alongside a Wood’s lamp exam, a UV light tool dermatologists already use in the office.

By the 90 day mark, patients showed real improvement across multiple measures of vitiligo severity and extent. Their quality-of-life scores improved too, meaning the changes weren’t just visible on skin; they were felt day to day.

Watching Pigment Return in Real Time

Beyond the standard assessments, researchers used two more advanced imaging techniques, reflectance confocal microscopy and line-field optical coherence tomography, to look beneath the surface of the skin. Both picked up new pigment cells forming in patterns consistent with repigmentation. A lot of that activity clustered around hair follicles, often one of the first places color returns in vitiligo, and in the skin’s deeper layers. Researchers note these particular findings were observational, not formally measured, so treat them as an early signal rather than a confirmed pattern.

What This Means for You

The study was relatively small and only followed patients for three months, so researchers say larger, longer trials are still needed to see how durable these results are over time.

Still, for a condition that can take months or years to visibly respond to treatment, having imaging tools that catch early progress could make a real difference for patients and dermatologists trying to stay the course.
