What Dermatologists Want Psoriasis Patients on GLP-1s to Know

GLP-1 medications have already changed how many people think about weight and metabolic health. Now dermatologists are exploring another potential benefit: whether the drugs could also improve psoriasis, as reported by Dermatology Times.

A new primer from the National Psoriasis Foundation’s Medical Board, published in JAMA Dermatology, doesn’t present new clinical trial data. Instead, it synthesizes the emerging research on GLP-1 receptor agonists—the drug class that includes Ozempic and Wegovy—and offers practical guidance for dermatologists. The timing matters: many people with psoriasis are already taking these medications for obesity or type 2 diabetes, two conditions that commonly overlap with the inflammatory skin disease.

What the Research Shows

The guidance is clear that GLP-1s aren’t being positioned as a psoriasis treatment on their own. Instead, the review suggests they may offer an additional benefit for some patients who already qualify for the medications because of obesity or type 2 diabetes. Improvements in psoriasis were observed particularly among people with these overlapping conditions, though the evidence is still too limited to predict exactly who will respond.

Semaglutide and liraglutide show up most often in the research, but the NPF’s Medical Board is careful to note that the studies are still fairly small and short, with most following patients for six months or less. For now, these medications should not be expected to replace an existing psoriasis regimen. If a patient’s psoriasis improves along the way, that’s a bonus, not the point: weight and metabolic health still come first.

Better Together

Since prescribing and monitoring these medications usually fall to primary care or endocrinology, the guidance emphasizes collaboration across specialties. Dermatologists are encouraged to ask about GLP-1 use during routine visits and stay in the loop even when they’re not the ones writing the prescription. The reassuring part: the available evidence suggests GLP-1s can be used alongside methotrexate, cyclosporine and biologics, medications many psoriasis patients already rely on, without new interaction concerns emerging in the reviewed studies. In other words, adding a GLP-1 for metabolic health may not require changes to an existing psoriasis treatment plan.

The research is still developing, but the message for now is simple: if you’re managing psoriasis and already taking or considering a GLP-1, it’s worth bringing up at your next dermatology visit.
