The Best Sea Salt Sprays for Beachy Hair, Wherever You Are

Sea salt spray was one of the first hair-styling products to really steal my heart. As an ocean girl through and through, I understood the appeal on the most basic level: It did what the ocean already did best, giving my hair loose ringlets with almost no work beyond a quick towel-dry and a scrunch with my hands before letting it air-dry to beachy perfection. That was over a decade ago, and while sea salt spray was a non-negotiable in my routine back then, it eventually fell out of rotation for reasons I still can’t quite explain—until now.

And I’m glad I’m back, especially now that the category has evolved, with plenty of options for every hair type, texture goal and ingredient preference. For example, some of these sprays skip salt altogether (yes, even counterintuitive as it may sound) in favor of film-forming polymers or botanical extracts, while others stick with classic sea salt or opt for magnesium sulfate, which stylists often consider a gentler mineral alternative. Many are also formulated with hydrating ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin and panthenol to help offset dryness.

Ahead, more on sea salt spray from an expert, plus scroll to the end for the best sea salt sprays to try in 2026.

Who Benefits Most From Sea Salt Spray?

“Sea salt spray acts as a lightweight texturizer by mimicking the grit, volume and matte finish you get after a day at the beach,” explains New York hairstylist Rae Ann Cotto of The Team, founded by Michelle Hong. “The salt causes the strands to contract slightly, which enhances the hair’s natural pattern. Clients with fine, flat or wavy hair profit the most. It gives fine hair instant thickness without weighing it down, and it coaxes loose waves into defined pieces. It’s also great for people with oily scalps as it works as an absorbent!”

Who Shouldn’t Use Sea Salt Spray?

“Any client with extremely dry, coarse or compromised hair should use salt sprays very sparingly—or avoid them entirely,” warns Cotto. “Because salt is naturally hygroscopic, it draws moisture directly out of the cuticle. If your hair is already high-porosity, bleached or severely damaged, salt spray could add to the issue, leaving the hair feeling like straw and prone to breakage.”

Can You Use Sea Salt Spray With Curly Hair?

“For people with curly hair, it’s all about layering and prep!” says Cotto. “The curlier the hair, the more you’ll want to add in a leave-in conditioner and keep your hair a little damp! It’s your best bet to avoid that crunchy too-much-product feeling.”

What to Look for in Sea Salt Spray

“Look for formulations balanced with humectants and emollients to counteract the salt,” Cotto suggests. “Aloe vera juice, sea kelp extract, glycerin and panthenol are excellent for drawing moisture into the hair, sealing the cuticle and keeping the texture touchable. Formulas featuring pink Himalayan salt or magnesium sulfate are also gentler on the hair shaft than standard table salt (sodium chloride).”

The 9 Best Sea Salt Sprays of 2026

Bumble and bumble’s OG salt spray just turned 25, and it’s held up remarkably well: the combo of magnesium sulfate and kelp extract gives you that gritty texture without the crunch.

Bumble and bumble surf spray

2 / 9

Unlike some of the gentler formulas out there, this one goes with the real deal—actual sea salt—for that classic tousled, matte texture. Sunflower seed extract is also thrown in to help fend off some of that sun exposure while you’re out enjoying it.

Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray

3 / 9

Another salt-free option, this one uses naturally derived polymers and upcycled jackfruit extract for texture that stays soft to the touch, plus vitamin B5 to keep strands from feeling stiff. The North Bondi fragrance—violet, jasmine, white musk—doesn’t hurt either.

This budget-friendly option keeps things simple: traditional sea salt for texture, plus rice protein and glycerin. The all-natural fragrance comes from cucumber, ylang ylang and oak moss instead of synthetics—and at $12, it’s proof you don’t need to spend big for good beach hair.

This one reads more like an apothecary shelf than a beach bag, with yarrow, sage, chamomile, witch hazel and comfrey all making an appearance alongside the magnesium sulfate doing the actual texture work.

R+Co Rockaway Salt Spray, Adds Volume and Hair Texture

7 / 9

This one doubles as a fragrance in its own right, with notes of bergamot, vanilla and sandalwood layered into the formula. Rice and spirulina extracts help offset the salt, so texture doesn’t come at the cost of feeling parched.

Reverie Mare Mediterranean Sea Mist ($34)

Pink Himalayan salt, technically just sodium chloride with trace minerals, gets an aloe, calendula and chamomile assist here, along with a fully essential-oil-based scent instead of synthetic fragrance. Bonus: there’s amethyst powder mixed in, which won’t do much for your hair but makes for a fun little detail.
